POST WORTH READING

VIDEO art journal with me #1 🥀

hello everyone! I hope you are all staying safe at home and healthy. Within the last weeks of being in a lockdown, I didn't feel creative at all. It was either the stress and anxiety from the major changes, or just the burnout and slump from finishing university. However, it has been a few weeks of rest and being rather lazy, and now I feel like I am ready to create again. So far I have been doing daily drawings on Instagram for a daily challenge for 30 days, and I will soon make a post about the journey of doing something for 30 days. In the meantime you can follow me on Instagram to see some more illustrations, drawing on paper and art journal inspiration. Last year I was into bullet journaling, but I realized that I would rather use Google Calendar, and make art journal for thoughts and creative expression. I love how the spread turned out, especially the qu

How To Start A Travel Journal 🚃

Hi everyone! With the social distancing and the virus, in the last days I have been dreaming of traveling somewhere warm and remote. With the travel bug in my head I wanted to share my tips for how to start a travel journal.

Last year I started making my first travel journal, and it was so much fun! I captured my trip to Paris, Brussels and Hamburg (photos below). I had many more but the journal has disappeared. Throughout these journeys I found a few tips and tricks for creating a travel journal, and today I want to share them with you.

THINGS YOU NEED TO START A TRAVEL JOURNAL

A notebook

I had chosen a pocket size notebook, however I realized that it was too small for my liking. I never had place for anything and it felt just too small. I also like to include some scraps from maps or guides, as well as tickets and those take quite some space. I swapped from mini notebook to a bigger one and it was perfect for my liking!

I must note, it shouldn't be too big either, as you will be traveling with it.

PS this is up to you, but of course you can make the travel spreads as you go, or you can also gather all the materials and then do the spread once you get home ☺️ Both ways it works perfectly. On the road you can write down emotions on the spot, but at home you can look back at the memories and write down your thoughts!

Pencils, pens and washi tape for the travel journal

I have a small pencil case where I took the following:

  • a few black pens
  • A pencil and eraser
  • Some colorful pens, 2-3
  • Washi tape
  • Sometimes I take a small box of oil pastels
  • Glue stick

I know that when you're on the road you don't want too much carrying. So choose wisely and make sure to pack just the necessities.

Maps, tickets and any guides you find along the way

This is a bread leaflet I found in a bakery in Oslo. It is so beautiful and will look great with a note in the travel journal reminding of the delicious pastry you had.

Now the most important thing. I suggest everywhere you go, pick out the maps and save the tickets. This is the key to the journals to make so special! I know it might seem like you are a hoarder, but be creative with what you can put on the travel journal.

Some things that I always keep and find for travel journal:

  • tickets for public transport or museums
  • maps
  • booklets of museums or city
  • receipts from cafe if it looks nice :)
  • free postcards that look cute and can be cut up
  • free journals or magazines (usually found in cafes, alongside with postcards)

QUESTION: Should I print photos of the places we will see on the trip?

Yes, why not? If you have a printer and know the route, this will make it easier to make the travel journals. Sometimes I get lucky and find a good photo in a city map or guide, but if you have them on hand it's even easier. Also, if you are very good with drawing, why don't you draw or sketch the place? That's always been my goal to be able to sketch a place while traveling 😄🌃

Where to get free images for travel journal?

When it comes to free images, I always tell people to look for beautiful and royalty free images on unsplash.com or pexels.com. Both of the sites are filled with images and you can easily find photos from every corner of the world.

What to write in a travel journal? Here's a few ideas.

  1. Write your thoughts and emotions overall about the city or country that you visited. What is the most memorable from the trip?
  2. Write a to do list you want to do while traveling.
  3. Make a list of places you want to eat or found memorable enough to write down. Maybe in the future you are visiting the city again and want to stop by?
  4. A funny memory that is worth writing down.
  5. A calendar with your travel plans.
